Brazos Midstream Successfully Commissions Next Generation Honeywell UOP Advanced Recovery Technology

Brazos completes successful performance test of two gas processing plants that were upgraded with Honeywell UOP RSV2 technology in late 2021 allowing for the higher recovery of ethane.

News Brief: December 14, 2022
Honeywell announced today that Brazos Midstream has completed successful performance tests of Honeywell UOP Ortloff’s recycle split vapor technology (RSV2) to increase recovery of valuable natural gas liquids (NGLs) on two cryogenic gas processing plants in the Permian Basin allowing for more advanced recovery operations. Honeywell UOP’s modular solution was utilized on two of Brazos’ existing 200 MMscfd gas processing plants to upgrade from a gas subcooled process (GSP) to an RSV process. Honeywell UOP Russell provided detailed design, fabrication, and assembly of the modular RSV2units. Honeywell UOP Ortloff’s RSV2 technology improves conventional GSP cryogenic gas processing by recycling the processed natural gas, increasing the recovery rate of NGLs. By combining low capital, low operating cost, and ultra-high NGL recovery rates, the plants can produce significantly better operating margins.

“After upgrading Brazos Midstream’s existing assets with RSV2 Technology, both plants recovered more than 99 percent of inlet ethane and 100 percent of inlet propane while operating at name plate capacity,” said Ryan Jaggi, Chief Operating Officer, Brazos Midstream.

“Brazos’ successful test of Honeywell UOP’s RSV2 Retrofit solution shows that existing gas processing assets can be improved to capture more of the inlet ethane,” said Helen Gross, Honeywell UOP Russell Business Director. “This ready-now technology has helped operate plants at higher C2 recovery levels than conventional GSP design and can generate additional revenue.”

The RSV2 retrofit unit can upgrade existing GSP plants to improve ethane rejection while maintaining high propane recovery. Other benefits of a RSV2 retrofit can include operational flexibility and increased plant capacity at RSV optimized recoveries.

Ortloff Engineers was acquired by Honeywell UOP in 2018 and brings the industry’s most advanced expertise in the recovery of high-value natural gas liquids from natural gas streams. Honeywell UOP Ortloff technologies are specialized to maximize NGL recovery, providing customers with high operational flexibility and greater returns on plant investments. Honeywell UOP Ortloff also specializes in unique technologies for removing sulfur from refinery feed stocks, ensuring greater plant reliability and operability over the refinery lifecycle.
